Potter County was named for Revolutionary War General James Potter, who was a general from Pennsylvania in the Continental Army during the American Revolution. James Potter never actually lived in Potter County and may have never even visited the area was formed by an Act of Assembly dated 26, 1804. Its county seat is Coudersport. Potter County has a board of commissioners form of government and is led by a 3-member commission elected-at-large.
